What are the odds? At the First Red Sox Game

1977

In 1977, I was a big Red Sox baseball fan. I watched all the games on TV and I also taught my father all the rules. So, I was able to convince my father to take us (Bora and Tamer) to a game at the Fenway Park. My father called up and got us very good seats, between home and 1st base side in the shade. One batter named George C. Scott, who was their slugger, hit a foul ball towards us. My father quickly raised his hand and nearly caught the ball (the reflexes of a natural baseball player even though my father has never played baseball). May I point out that the ball is hard as a rock and is virtually impossible to catch without a glove! The ball dropped in front of us while we just watched the ball. The people next to us grabbed the ball away from us. This was our first game and we did not know we should have tried to grab the ball. We did not end up with the ball, however it was memorable that someone who knew nothing about baseball could even catch a ball without a glove was incredible. The odds of a ball even coming near you during a game are about one million to one. We have gone to many games since that first game but we never had a ball come even close to us. After the game, my father bought us two Red Sox batting helmets, which made us very happy.
